It’s got to be a hard job for any producer to go through thousands of auditions to find just the right voice. My hat’s off to them for not only the time they spend but also the understanding of just how important the right voice talent is to the project!
If I had a wish for this industry, it would be that all clients would understand the importance of hiring the perfect talent to represent their business just like producers do. It’s not going to be a voice you can get for $50 with delivery that needs training and sound that needs work. It’s going to come from a professionally trained actor with stellar equipment and sound booth. A talent that has invested in their career with a voice coach, top notch demo and ability to edit their own work and understand the tech side of the industry. Are you going to pay a bit more than $50? Heck ya! But consider that this voice actor will help sell your product. He/she should be on ALL media, even the phone system. Good business owners understand the concept of branding and a voice should be part of that equation from beginning to end.
If a producer spends oodles of hours combing through auditions for just one project then the same time and energy should be spent thinking about what type of voice talent would represent your business perfectly. Are you selling to a young audience? Then a young sounding voice talent should be considered so they can relate to the customer. A script should also be written with the demographic in mind. If a 50+ year old is writing a script to sell to an 18+ year old, it may not be relatable to that buyer thus resulting in poor results. If you are selling products to help an older person then certainly a young voice talent would not work but a bit older, authoritative and smooth voice talent would work better.
I get requests for auditions daily and most give me very little to work from. Like: Male 30 to 50. What does this mean? What is the product? Who are we trying to reach? What type of voice is needed? For example: authoritative and deep voice or fun and hip. A good voice talent can change their voice to fit the project so when I get vague guidelines, it’s up to our interpretation, which may or may not be what the client wants. I’ve become a good mind reader but more information will always help find the exact voice talent.
